Finalmente è Halloween!!

No, no…non si tratta di uno scherzo del vostro vicino per l’imminente Halloween, ma dell’opera …di Venetians che l’artista polacco Pawel Althamer (Varsavia, 1967) ha presentato a Venezia per la Biennale ancora in corso.
Le opere di Althamer indagano la fragilità e la vulnerabilità del corpo umano: nei suoi lavori il corpo è evocato attraverso l’utilizzo di materiali organici e da surrogati della presenza umana, come nel caso di questa installazione dove i volti delle sculture in scala reale, sono stati realizzati grazie a calchi in gesso dei volti di alcuni abitanti della città di Venezia. Successivamente i calchi sono stati fusi in plastica – per questa ed altre installazioni Althamer si è servito della collaborazione della piccola azienda di materiali plastici fondata dal padre – e uniti a corpi filiformi.
Le ottanta sculture compongo insieme una folla di anime che sembra essere in attesa di qualcosa e ricordare l’affermazione di Althamer: “rendersi conto che il corpo è solo un veicolo dell’anima è una conquista importante”.

Finally, it’s Halloween!!
No, no… this is not a Halloween joke by your neighborhood; instead, this is Venetians, a work Polish artist Pawel Althamer (Warsaw, 1967) presented during current Venice Biennial.
Althamer’s works investigate the fragility and vulnerability of human body: his works evoke body through the employment of organic materials and surrogates of the human presence, as it is the case for this installation, in which sculpted life-size faces were made up via plaster casts of some people’s faces living in Venice. After this, casts were melted into plastic – for this and other installations Althamer was assisted by the small plastic materials factory founded by his father – and joined with threadlike shapes. Eighty sculptures all together form a crowd of souls which seems to be waiting for something and reminds of Althamer’s statement: “It is fundamental to realize that boy is just a vehicle of soul”.
